CROC Japan
CROC Program
A three-week hands-on residency in Hasami, Japan.
You’ll learn both wheel-throwing and porcelain painting in small groups.
We teach through skill and inspiration, adapting to your level and interests.
The goal is not only to refine your technique, but to help you build a deeper connection to the material, the place, and your own creative process.
Program Structure
The program is divided into three phases, combining structured
learning with personal exploration.
week 1
The first week focuses on fundamentals.
You’ll attend wheel-throwing and painting classes to master basic techniques, understand materials, and develop rhythm.
week 2
Technical classes continue in the morning while the afternoon is dedicated to independent projects.
week 3
The third week is for completing your independent project.
You’ll create your own works at your own pace, supported by ongoing feedback and advice from us.
By the end, you’ll have gained new techniques and inspiration — along with a small collection of original pieces to take home.
Wheel trowing
You’ll learn traditional wheel-throwing techniques using tools such as the hera for shaping and the kana for trimming.
We start with simple forms like rice bowls and small plates to build precision and rhythm — later, you can choose your own shapes and develop them freely.

Painting
You’ll practice both underglaze and overglaze porcelain painting, using traditional brushes such as the dami for filling and fine brushes for line work.
We begin with classic motifs inspired by Hasami’s long painting tradition, then guide you toward developing your own designs and color compositions.

Other Techniques
There’s much more we can share from our experience.
Depending on your interests, we offer optional classes on request — especially during the second phase.
These may include glazing, stacking the kiln, recycling clay, carving, or making tools.

Excursion
You’ll join guided tours that take you behind the scenes of Hasami’s ceramic culture — visiting local manufacturers, studios, and the Kyushu Ceramic Museum.
We also share recommendations for places to explore on your own during the weekends.
